    • Embodiments of a collision-avoidance transponder and method for reducing collisions with an aerial hazard are generally described herein. The collision-avoidance transponder may be configured for location on an aerial hazard and may be configured to regularly transmit a signal that mimics an air traffic control (ATC) transponder reply signal. The regularly-transmitted signal may include an altitude indication, such as the pressure altitude, of the aerial hazard. A collision-avoidance and warning system on an aircraft may receive the regularly-transmitted signal and provide a warning under certain conditions to allow the pilot to avoid the aerial hazard. The collision-avoidance transponder may include an ATC-type transponder and control circuitry to cause the transponder to regularly transmit the signal that includes a pressure altitude of the aerial hazard.

    • This invention relates to a firing launching system and method which comprises a base having a plurality of apertures. The plurality of apertures receive a plurality of mortars which, in turn, receive a plurality of Pyrotechnic projectiles which may be situated in the plurality of mortars, respectively. The Pyrotechnic projectiles may then be ignited and launched to provide a fireworks display. The base may be a one-piece molded solid construction and provided with the plurality of apertures such that at least two-thirds of each of the plurality of mortars is encased to provide support to a wall of the mortar. The base may be provided with a plurality of apertures having a common diameter for receiving a common size mortar or receiving one of a plurality of sleeves, each having the same outer diameter, but a varying inner diameter to permit the sleeve to receive a different sized mortars. In alternate embodiments, the base may be provided hollow such that it can be filled with an insulator, such as water or sand, at a launch site. In this embodiment, the base can be emptied to facilitate transporting the base to and from the pyrotechnic launch site.

    • Apparatus for rotating a driven shaft in the same direction at two different speeds upon rotation of a drive shaft in respective, opposed directions. The apparatus includes a sun gear on the drive shaft, a ring gear on the driven shaft, a planet carrier rotatably mounted on the drive shaft, adjacent to the sun gear, one or more planetary gears rotatably mounted on the planet carrier and in mesh with the sun and ring gears. An over-running clutch locks the planet carrier to the drive shaft when the latter rotates in one direction to thereby lock the planetary gears to the sun and ring gears to cause rotation of the ring gear and the driven shaft in a first direction at a first speed. A sprag prevents rotation of the planet carrier relative to a fixed support when the drive shaft rotates in the opposite direction to thereby allow rotation of the planetary gears about fixed axes to rotate the ring gear and thereby the driven shaft in the first direction at a second speed.
